Free body-horror mini-game
Discover My Body is a free medical horror simulation game that will take you into the future in a dystopian society. The year is 2040 and the humans’ struggle to feel connections still haven’t improved. You will play a medical student who wants to conduct a strange procedure developed to enhance human consciousness. You will scan the body assigned to you to look for specific instances of the procedure’s evolution to the patient. Discover My Body is a short sci-fi game that will show you the horrors of transhumanism and social alienation.
A disturbing game
In Discover My Body, there is a fad going on in the futuristic society called the Flowering. It is a medical procedure where the doctors infect humans with a psychically-powerful lab–synthesized fungi to fuse with its shared collective consciousness. As a medical student, it is your job to apply this fungus to a new host—one of the fungi’s researchers. He’s excited about it, which is a little bit disturbing—seeing as the experiment is highly intrusive.
The rest of the game will have you scanning the host’s body by moving a little robot-shaped scanner across the larger black window on the screen. There are three layers that you need to scan: topical, skeletal, and nervous. You will need to find a hotspot and the patient will explain to you what's happening to him. The patient might start screaming but don’t worry, as it’s all part of the process.
The lo-fi presentation, scratchy and fuzzy sound effects, and the disturbing imagery of a distorting body all add up to give players of this game an unnerving experience. Add in the uninterested tone of the patient as he nonchalantly narrates the gruesome process makes it even more creepy. With its minimal elements, this game manages to feel repulsive and nihilistic—very much reminiscent of David Cronenberg’s horror filmography in the 1970s.
Short but creepy
Discover My Body is a no-brainer—literally—if you are into body horror or just looking for a nice quick scare. Despite having an unnerving concept, the game’s premise has a lot of potential. However, the game is very short—in fact, it only lasts for ten minutes. It has very minimal gameplay and the procedure is so quick that the ending seemed abrupt.
